Tobacco and Oral Cancer

Understanding how tobacco damages oral tissues and how early prevention can save lives.

Tobacco use is the single largest preventable cause of oral cancer. Scientific evidence shows that most oral and lung cancers caused by tobacco can be prevented by avoiding tobacco in all forms.

Odisha has one of the highest rates of smokeless tobacco use in India, placing a large segment of the population at serious risk.

Tobacco Use in Odisha – A Serious Concern

  • Approximately 43% of adults use smokeless tobacco
  • About 40% of rural women use smokeless tobacco
  • Nearly 75% of people in tribal communities use some form of tobacco

Common forms include gutka, khaini, betel quid with tobacco, pan masala with tobacco, zarda, gudakhu, cigarettes and bidis.

How Tobacco Damages the Mouth

Tobacco users have 1.7–2.5 times higher risk of serious oral problems compared to non-users.
